The last Christmas

Tis the season for gift wrapping, giving and returning but if Christmas isn’t something you’re into or even celebrate, it can be hard to know your place amongst the tinsel and lights.

Well, never fear. There is plenty to do in Melbourne over the holiday season to keep you merry.  Here’s our top 10!

1) Take a hike. No seriously take a hike. The best part of having Christmas in Australia is that it happens in summer. Grab some friends, a map and go for a walk in the great outdoors. There are plenty of fantastic walking trails like the one in Mt Macedon where you can walk all the way up to the Cross and feel on top of the world.

2) Go to the movies. Because holidays should be filled with big screens and even bigger buckets of popcorn. We recommend Cinema Nova or Lido if you’re after some old fashion movie magic.

3) Have an ‘Orphans Christmas.’ Invite some friends over, get creative in the kitchen and crack open the board games. Who says a day without family needs to be a lonely one?

4) Train hard. There’s nothing that screams satisfaction more than free transport which is why on December 25, PTV is giving free train services across all metropolitan and V-Lines! If you’ve ever wanted to check out some of Victoria’s best beaches that may not be so close, now’s the time with sandy destinations such as Sorrento Beach always proving a popular choice this time of year.

5) Go to the Zoo. Melbourne Zoo is open on Christmas Day. Do we need to say any more!? Well, maybe where you can get all the info.

6) Relax! You have the day off -read a book, meditate or start that business you always wanted to do. The world is your oyster (until it resumes on December 26).

7) Plan your Boxing Day (no one said this would be pretty). Ahhh Boxing Day, bringing out worst in people since Cards Against Humanity. In case you’re not familiar with this retail treat, Boxing Day is when stores have serious discounts in a bid to get rid of their old stock before the years out. With destinations such as Chadstone and Highpoint proving very popular very quickly, we suggest getting in early with a list of what you want before someone else nabs it! (Also maybe bring a mouth guard, it can get vicious).

8) Run the day. While some may eat away their day, you can run it. Coburg Parkrun sees runners from all over Melbourne take part in a 5km park run at 8am.

9) Make your holiday season count by making someone else’s. There is always a way to help someone with organisations such as The Smith Family in need of volunteers all year round.

10) Stop reading this and go back to sleep.
