Catch up with Yanxi Chen, designer from VAMFF 2016

Study Melbourne’s international student fashion show at the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, A Stitch in Time, A Place of Mine, is just around the corner. As we prepare for this year’s show, we caught up with one of our international student designers from last year’s show ‘Four Seasons in One Night’. Yanxi Chen from China completed her Bachelor of Fashion at Box Hill Institute, and found her involvement in our VAMFF showcase helped launch her career.

What have you been up to? Are you working in the fashion/creative industry or are you completing another course?

Since I completed my Bachelor of Fashion at Box Hill Institute, I have been working in the fashion industry as a fashion designer for an upcoming fashion label in Melbourne. Currently, I am traveling in China for a business trip. I will be in China for almost two months and will be returning to Melbourne at the start of March.

What did you like the most about participating in Study Melbourne’s Four Season in One Night?

It was such a wonderful night! Nice people, good food, and the most exciting part – watching the show! The event opened up more opportunities for me to work in the fashion industry and allowed me to share my creativity with the wider public. Participating in this event, meant a lot to me as a young designer beginning my career.

What advice would you give to this year’s designers?

If they are a young designer or they haven’t got a job yet, I would encourage them to look for opportunities to get into the industry. Sometimes life can be hard and things that happen to us may seem unpleasant, but in another way, life always teaches us lessons and gives us unexpected presents. Without overcoming difficulties you would never realise your full ability and strength. So, keep going and learn new things out of university.

How has the experience opened up other opportunities for you?

After the show, I had a number of creative people in the industry contact me and want to collaborate with me on new projects, including a photographer, makeup artist, stylist, etc. I just wanted to say a big thank you to all the people who came into my life that made me feel so special.
